“Night and Fog” – A love story lit from within by courage.

Every once in awhile, a book comes along that reminds us why stories matter – not just to entertain us, but to keep history awake. “Night and Fog” is one of those books. Set in the shadow of World War II, it drips us straight into the heart of the Dutch resistance, where ordinary people are forced to make impossible choices, and love becomes both a risk and a lifetime.

This isn’t a dry war chronicle or another textbook retelling. It’s a human story – messy, brave, romantic, and devastating. You follow people living under a tyrant’s boot, trying to protect what little goodness they can while pushing back against a force that seems unstoppable. And somewhere in that darkness, love doesn’t just survice – it becomes the very thing that keeps them fighting.

If you are drawn to stories about quiet heroism, about what people will sacrifice for each other, or about how love can glow even in the coldest hours, this book will hit you right in the heart. “Night and Fog” doesn’t just show history – it makes you feel it, one stolen moment and one act of resistance at a time.

“Night and Fog” is a terrific read. One indicator to me of a good book is whether it tugs at my heart and evokes tears. “Night and Fog” did that a few times. Another indicator of a historical novel is whether it accurately relays real events. As an avid reader of WWII, I can say that this book truly portrays the times. The story is anchored to horrendous conditions the author’s courageous family experience under the fist of Nazi occupation. Their bravery and resilience inspire our vigilance and actions in our time.

Congratulations Paul, on a major accomplishment.  Doing loads of research,
writing, editing, and re-editing is such a tremendous undertaking; your
accomplishment is a testament to determination, desire, and skill.   At times
during your writing, you must have felt a part of the world you were writing
about.  You were alongside very important people and watched them struggle
in impossible situations.  You did them a favor by telling their story and they
did you a favor by making sure you could find enough information on them to
bring us –the reader into their lives.

“Night and Fog” gave me an up close and personal insight into resistance in the Netherlands during the Nazi occupation in World War II.  Families are torn apart by all that is happening around them and to them.  At times I was absorbed in the emotion of the resistance, though I am sure my feelings were minimal compared to what the Dutch people suffered to achieve their freedom.”

I just want to say how impressed I was with how the author has brought the characters and the world of their story to life! Paul’s passion and compassion are woven into each line. The introduction was so tender. What a tribute to this marvelous family and a testimony to empathy and forgiveness as well as courage and strength.
